The majority voted against a motion introduced by Australian Democrats Senator Andrew Bartlett, which means it was unsuccessful. The motion was:
(1) Schedule 1, item 14, page 5 (line 8), omit paragraph 10(1)(b), substitute:
(b) a member appointed to represent the interests of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities adjacent to the Marine Park;
(c) at least 1 but not more than 3 other members.

Background to the bill
The bill was introduced in response to recommendations made in the Review of the Corporate Governance of Statutory Authorities and Office Holders (the Uhrig Review).(Read more about the background to the bill in its bills digest. ) The bill amends the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Act 1975 to:
