Name changed from “a national integrity commission” to “withdrawing troops from Afghanistan”.
Description changed from “Australia likes to think of itself as relatively free from corruption; it is not. Over recent decades appalling revelations of blatant misconduct, malfeasance and corruption by public officials, including ministers, led to strong public demands for proactive independent anti-corruption commissions with the powers of a royal commission. One by one state and territory governments bowed to the pressure. The resulting patchwork of disparate bodies exemplifies the difficulties of establishing a unified legal framework in a decentralised federation.Stopping the rot of corruption has to become a national priority. The multi-agency approach of successive administrations is patently ineffectual. This is exemplified by The National Organise Crime Response Plan 2015-18 which makes no mention of corruption at the higher levels of government. It also omits to mention the NSW ICAC. The ad hoc and piecemeal approach to tackling corruption is both ineffective. and wasteful of resources. In addition to the 31 agencies designed to uphold the law every state has its own approach to corruption. There is no one body specifically charged with combating corruption in the Commonwealth Government. ” to “the federal government should begin to withdraw Australian troops from Afghanistan as soon as safely possible”.
