Criminal Code Amendment (Deepfake Sexual Material) Bill 2024 - Second Reading - Ban politicial deepfakes
Not passed by a small majority
No rebellions 47% attendance
Division last edited 1st Sep 2024 by mackay staff
The majority voted against an amendment introduced by Queensland Senator Larissa Waters (Greens), which means it failed. This amendment would have added the words below to the usual second reading motion, which is "that the bill be read a second time" (parliamentary jargon for agreeing with the main idea of the bill).
At the end of the motion, add ", but the Senate notes that Australia, having ratified the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, has an international obligation to make the creation of, and associated threat of the creation of, deepfake sexual material an offence."
Nobody rebelled against their party.
