• Appropriation Bill (No. 1) 2024-2025 and four others - Second Reading - Coal and gas

Description

•
Andrew McLachlan

•
The time for the consideration of the Appropriation Bill (No. 5) 2023-2024 and four related bills has expired. We come to sheet 2660, standing in the name of the Australian Greens. The question before the Senate is that the second reading amendment moved by Senator McKim be agreed to.

• The majority voted against an [amendment](https://parlinfo.aph.gov.au/parlInfo/search/display/display.w3p;query=Id:legislation/billhome/display.w3p;query=Id%3A%22legislation%2Famend%2Fr7186_amend_4130e0a9-097f-4663-8613-272c84465740%22;rec=0) introduced by Tasmanian Senator [Nick McKim](https://theyvoteforyou.org.au/people/senate/tasmania/nick_mckim) (Greens), which means it failed. The amendment would have added the text below to the usual second reading motion, which is "that the bill be read a second time" (parliamentary jargon for agreeing with the main idea).
• ### Amendment text
• > *At the end of the motion, add “, but the Senate is of the view that:*
• >
• > *(a) public money should not be used to support the new extraction and burning of coal and gas, while there is a climate crisis;*
• >
• > *(b) the proportion of the $566 million for Geoscience Australia to map coal and gas reserves and providing this information to coal and gas corporations for free should be removed from the budget; and*
• >
• > *(c) the $1.5 billion equity injection to facilitate the construction of the Middle Arm Gas and Petrochemical Hub should be removed from the Contingency Reserve .”*
