Description

Scott Ryan

It being Thursday, I will run through these in the order on the Notice Paper. I will commence with Senator Brown on No. 1160. Senator Urquhart?

Anne Urquhart

I ask that general business notice of motion No. 1160 be taken as a formal motion.

Scott Ryan

Is there any objection to this motion being taken as formal?

Honourable senators: Yes.

There is an objection. Senator Gallagher?

Katy Gallagher

I'd like to deal with that motion now.

Scott Ryan

Yes, Senator Gallagher.

Katy Gallagher

Pursuant to contingent notice of motion No. 3 standing in the name of Senator Wong, I move:

That so much of the standing orders be suspended as would prevent general business motion No. 1160 being moved immediately and determined without amendment or debate.

Scott Ryan

I'm going to use my discretion as the chair to offer those who I don't record, who objected to that motion being taken as formal—because if we proceed this way we will end up dealing with substantially fewer motions in today's order of business than we would otherwise.

An honourable senator interjecting—

That's okay, I'm happy to put it. I was offering senators that courtesy. The question is that the motion to suspend standing orders moved by Senator Gallagher be agreed to. I note that this does not require an absolute majority.

- The majority voted in favour of a [motion](https://www.openaustralia.org.au/senate/?gid=2021-06-24.35.4) to suspend the usual procedural rules - known as [standing orders](https://peo.gov.au/understand-our-parliament/how-parliament-works/parliament-at-work/standing-orders/) - to let another vote happen.
