- Coronavirus Economic Response Package (Payments and Benefits) Bill 2020 and related bills - Second Reading - Casual workers
Description

Jess Walsh

I move:

At the end of the motion, add ", but the Senate:

- The majority voted against an [amendment](https://www.openaustralia.org.au/senate/?gid=2020-04-08.120.1) to the usual [second reading](https://peo.gov.au/understand-our-parliament/how-parliament-works/bills-and-laws/making-a-law-in-the-australian-parliament/) motion "*that the bill be read for a second time*" (which is parliamentary jargon for agreeing with the main idea of the bill). This mean that the amendment failed.
- This amendment was introduced by Victorian Senator [Jess Walsh](https://theyvoteforyou.org.au/people/senate/victoria/jess_walsh) (Labor) and, if it had been successful, its text would have been added to the usual second reading motion as a note. In other words, it didn't seek to change the actual text of the bills.
- Senator Walsh explained the rationale behind her amendment in [her contribution](https://www.openaustralia.org.au/senate/?gid=2020-04-08.105.1) to the debate.
- ### Amendment text
- > *At the end of the motion, add ", but the Senate:*
- >
- > *(a) notes that casual workers deserve to be treated with the same respect as every other worker who faces losing their job because of this pandemic; and*
- >
- > *(b) calls on the Government to provide the JobKeeper payment to the 1.1 million casual workers who have worked for their employer for less than a year".*

(b) calls on the Government to provide the JobKeeper payment to the 1.1 million casual workers who have worked for their employer for less than a year".

Scott Ryan

The question is that the second reading amendment moved by Senator Walsh be agreed to.
