<p>I seek leave to amend general business notice of motion No. 71 standing in my name, relating to families and the tax system, relating to income splitting. Leave is granted.</p>
<p>I move the motion as amended:</p>
- Since the same number of senators voted for and against this [motion](https://www.openaustralia.org.au/senate/?id=2019-07-31.274.1), the motion didn't pass. It had been introduced by Queensland Senator [Pauline Hanson](https://theyvoteforyou.org.au/people/senate/queensland/pauline_hanson) (Pauline Hanson's One Nation Party).

- > *That the Senate—*
- >
- > *(a) acknowledges that:*
- >
- >> *(i) the family is the basis of society and, in most cases, the best place to raise children,*
- >>
- >> *(ii) policies that encourage the formation of stable families should be supported,*
- >>
- >> *(iii) the freedom to choose whether a parent can stay at home or pursue work is vital to the formation of stable families, and*
- >
- > *(b) calls on the Senate to debate or have a senate inquiry into the benefits of giving married couples the option to prepare and file joint income returns and income splitting.*
<p class="italic">That the Senate—</p>
<p class="italic">(a) acknowledges that:</p>
<p class="italic">(i) the family is the basis of society and, in most cases, the best place to raise children,</p>
<p class="italic">(ii) policies that encourage the formation of stable families should be supported,</p>
<p class="italic">(iii) the freedom to choose whether a parent can stay at home or pursue work is vital to the formation of stable families, and</p>
<p class="italic">(b) calls on the Senate to debate or have a senate inquiry into the benefits of giving married couples the option to prepare and file joint income returns and income splitting.</p>
