<p>I move notice of motion No. 1149:</p>
<p class="italic">That the Senate:</p>
- The majority voted in favour of a [motion](https://www.openaustralia.org.au/senate/?id=2018-10-18.143.1) introduced by Labor Senator [Lisa Singh](https://theyvoteforyou.org.au/people/senate/tasmania/lisa_singh) (Tas), which means it succeeded. Motions like these do not make any legal changes alone, but can be politically influential as they represent the will of the Senate.

- > *That the Senate:*

- > *(d) compares the fanfare when the then Prime Minister, Mr Turnbull, commissioned the report at the April 2017 India Australia Business Dinner in Mumbai, to the Government's efforts to bury the report since it was handed over in April 2018; and*
- > *(e) urges the Federal Government to respond to the report and its recommendations, taking Australia's relationship with India to the level it deserves.*
<p class="italic">(a) welcomes the release of the landmark report, <i>An India economic strategy to 2035</i>, by Mr Peter Varghese, AO, which develops a strategic plan for Australia's future engagement with India;</p>
<p class="italic">(b) notes:</p>
<p class="italic">(i) that according to this report, no single market over the next 20 years will offer more growth opportunities for Australia than India, and</p>
<p class="italic">(ii) the ten sectors highlighted in the report to optimise Australia's potential to satisfy India's priority needs are the flagship education sector, the three lead sectors of agribusiness, resources, and tourism, and the six 'promising' sectors of energy, health, financial services, infrastructure, sport, and science and innovation;</p>
<p class="italic">(c) recognises that the Australian Labor Party has already announced its in principle agreement with the report and ten key recommendations, as part of its 'FutureAsia' policy;</p>
<p class="italic">(d) compares the fanfare when the then Prime Minister, Mr Turnbull, commissioned the report at the April 2017 India Australia Business Dinner in Mumbai, to the Government's efforts to bury the report since it was handed over in April 2018; and</p>
<p class="italic">(e) urges the Federal Government to respond to the report and its recommendations, taking Australia's relationship with India to the level it deserves.</p>
