- The majority voted against a [motion](https://www.openaustralia.org.au/senate/?id=2018-06-19.221.1) introduced by Australian Conservatives Senator [Cory Bernardi](https://theyvoteforyou.org.au/people/senate/sa/cory_bernardi), which means the motion failed.
There was one rebel in this vote. Liberal Senator [Dean Smith](https://theyvoteforyou.org.au/people/senate/wa/dean_smith) [crossed the floor](https://www.peo.gov.au/learning/fact-sheets/crossing-the-floor.html) and voted 'no' against the rest of his party (who voted 'yes').

<p>The coalition government will never privatise the ABC. The motion acknowledges that this is the policy of the government. The government will always work to support Commonwealth-funded agencies to be the best possible stewards of taxpayer resources.</p>
<p class="speaker">Sue Lines</p>
<p>The question is that general business notice of motion No. 835 standing in the name of Senator Bernardi be agreed to.</p>
