Australian Border Force Bill 2015 and related bill - Third Reading - Pass the bill
- Australian Border Force Act 2015 Bill and related bill - Third Reading - Pass the bill
Description
- The majority agreed to pass the bills in the Senate (in parliamentary jargon, they voted in favour of giving the bills a [third reading](http://www.peo.gov.au/learning/fact-sheets/making-a-law.html)). The bills will now be sent back to the House of Representatives for the [Members of Parliament](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Member_of_parliament#Australia) to decide whether they agree with the [Senators](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_Senate)' amendments. If so, the bills will become law.
- You can follow the bills progress through Parliament on the bills' websites (see under 'External links').
- ### How to find out more about the bills
- Go to the [bills digest](http://www.aph.gov.au/Parliamentary_Business/Bills_Legislation/bd/bd1415a/15bd094) to learn more about what the bills do and what issues they raise.
- ### Controversy
- [Clause 42](http://parlinfo.aph.gov.au/parlInfo/search/display/display.w3p;db=LEGISLATION;id=legislation%2Fbills%2Fr5408_first-reps%2F0006;query=Id%3A%22legislation%2Fbills%2Fr5408_first-reps%2F0001%22;rec=0) of the Australian Border Force Bill 2015 makes it an offence for an "[entrusted person](http://parlinfo.aph.gov.au/parlInfo/search/display/display.w3p;db=LEGISLATION;id=legislation%2Fbills%2Fr5408_first-reps%2F0001;query=Id%3A%22legislation%2Fbills%2Fr5408_first-reps%2F0001%22;rec=0)" (which includes Immigration and Border Protection workers) to make a record of confidential information or to disclose confidential information. [Comments in the media](http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2015/jun/05/detention-turns-refugees-into-patients-dont-jail-doctors-for-saying-so?CMP=share_btn_tw) have suggested that this clause could lead to doctors being charged under this offence for revealing conditions in detention centres.

Title
Bills — Australian Border Force Bill 2015, Customs and Other Legislation Amendment (Australian Border Force) Bill 2015; Third Reading
- Australian Border Force Bill 2015 and related bill - Third Reading - Pass the bill
Description
### Motion:
- The majority agreed to pass the bills in the Senate (in parliamentary jargon, they voted in favour of giving the bills a [third reading](http://www.peo.gov.au/learning/fact-sheets/making-a-law.html)). The bills will now be sent back to the House of Representatives for the [Members of Parliament](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Member_of_parliament#Australia) to decide whether they agree with the [Senators](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_Senate)' amendments. If so, the bills will become law.
That these bills be now read a third time.
- You can follow the bills progress through Parliament on the bills' websites (see under 'External links').
### Third reading
This is the final stage in consideration of a bill and is usually a formality. Although the standing orders (written rules) provide for the third reading to take place on another sitting after the consideration in detail has been completed, in practice the House allows the Minister to move the motion ‘That this bill be read a third time’ immediately. Debate at this stage is relatively rare and is restricted to the contents of the bill, that is, the matters contained in the clauses and schedules of the bill. When the motion has been agreed to, the Clerk again reads out the long title of the bill. This signifies that the bill has finally passed the House.
