Title

• Motions Biennale of Sydney
• Motions - Biennale of Sydney - Commend protest against Transfield sponsorship

Description

•
Lee Rhiannon

•
I seek leave to amend general business notice of motion No. 136 standing in my name for today relating to the Biennale of Sydney and events surrounding Transfield's sponsorship of that with regard to their work with refugees.

•
Leave granted.

• The majority voted against [commending the artists](http://www.openaustralia.org.au/senate/?id=2014-03-04.98.1) who have protested against [Transfield Holdings](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transfield_Holdings)' sponsorship of the [Biennale of Sydney](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biennale_of_Sydney).
• ### Why protest Transfield's sponsorship?
• Transfield Holdings is a shareholder in [Transfield Services](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transfield_Services), which is being paid $1.22 billion by the Australian Government to run offshore detention centres on [Manus Island](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manus_Island_Regional_Processing_Centre) and [Nauru](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nauru_detention_centre). By opposing Transfield Holdings' sponsorship, the artists are protesting against the government's [mandatory detention](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mandatory_detention_in_Australia) policy.
• ### Text of the motion
• > *That the Senate—*
• > *(a) notes that:*
• >> *(i) [Transfield Holdings](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transfield_Holdings) is a major sponsor of the [19th Biennale of Sydney](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biennale_of_Sydney#19th_Biennale_of_Sydney_.282014.29),*
• >> *(ii) Transfield Holdings is a shareholder in [Transfield Services](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transfield_Services),*
• >> *(iii) Transfield Services is being paid $1.22 billion by the Australian Government to run offshore detention centres on [Manus Island](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manus_Island_Regional_Processing_Centre) and [Nauru](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nauru_detention_centre),*
• >> *(iv) five artists have pulled out of the Biennale of Sydney because of Transfield’s links to Australia’s cruel [mandatory detention policies](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mandatory_detention_in_Australia), and*
• >> *(v) 28 Biennale artists have written to the Biennale board, urging it to cut ties with Transfield and to find new sponsors; and*
• > *(b) commends the courage and commitment to human rights of the Biennale artists who have both written to the board requesting new sponsors and the artists who have pulled out of the Biennale of Sydney.*
