It “make[s] provision for the marriage of same sex couples in England and Wales”.(See a copy of the Act [here](http://services.parliament.uk/bills/2013-14/marriagesamesexcouplesbill.html).)
References
- The majority voted against a [motion](http://www.openaustralia.org/senate/?id=2013-02-07.41.1) to congratulate the UK Prime Minister [David Cameron](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Cameron) "for his leadership in passing historic marriage equality legislation through the [House of Commons](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_of_Commons_of_the_United_Kingdom)".
- Despite the motion's wording, the UK same-sex marriage legislation is actually still being considered by the House of Commons. But a large majority [did recently vote](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marriage_%28Same_Sex_Couples%29_Act_2013#Second_Reading) in favour of the main idea of the bill (that is, they voted to read it [for a second time](http://www.peo.gov.au/learning/fact-sheets/making-a-law.html)).
- Greens Party Senator [Sarah Hanson-Young](https://theyvoteforyou.org.au/people/senate/sa/sarah_hanson-young) introduced the motion.
- ###Background to the motion
- The [Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill 2013 (UK)](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marriage_%28Same_Sex_Couples%29_Act_2013) was introduced into the House of Commons by the UK Government on 24 January 2013. Its purpose is to legalise [same-sex marriage in England and Wales](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Same-sex_marriage_in_the_United_Kingdom).
- Although same-sex couples in the United Kingdom can already have their relationships recognised as a [civil partnership](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civil_partnership_in_the_United_Kingdom), they cannot legally marry.
- In Australia, [same-sex marriage](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recognition_of_same-sex_unions_in_Australia) is illegal but there have been [several recent attempts](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recognition_of_same-sex_unions_in_Australia#Same-sex_marriage_attempts_in_federal_parliament) to pass legislation to legalise it.
